다음 글은 싱클레어 퍼거슨(Dr. Sinclair B. Ferguson)이 2004년 Marrow Controversy에 대한 강연 중에서 언급된 존 콜쿤 (John Colquhounof Leith:1748-1827) 의 "율법과 복음"에 대한 글을 번역한 것이다.

자신의 순종이 완전하다고 말하지 않으면서 이러한 순종에 의지하는 삶을 바탕으로 살아간다면 그는 율법주의자이거나 자기 의를 말하는 자라고 여겨져야 할 것이다.

A man is to be counted a legalist or self righteous if, while he does not pretend that his obedience is perfect, he yet relies on it for a title to life.

자기 의를 주장하는 사람들은, 모든 세대에 걸쳐서, 하나님께서 아담에게 요구하신 행위 언약의 상태를, 자신들이 완전히 충족 시킬 수 없다고 말하면서도, 자신들을 위하여 이러한 언약의 다양한 모형들을 만들고 있지만, 이는 하나님께서 만드신 것과는 거리감이 있을 수 밖에 없고, 완전한 순종의 의미보다는 하위의 것이라 하더라도 여전히 행위 언약의 특성을 나타내고 있다.

Self-righteous men have in all ages set aside as impossible to be fulfilled by them, that condition of the covenant of works which God had imposed on Adam; and have framed for themselves various models of that covenant, which, though they are far from being institutions of God, and stand upon terms lower than perfect obedience, yet are of the nature of a covenant of works.

율법의 행위로서 의를 찾으려는 믿지 않는 유대인들은, 완벽한 순종을 가장하려는 것에 대하여 그렇게 무지하거나 주제 넘지는 않는다.

The unbelieving Jews who sought righteousness by the works of the Law were not so very ignorant or presumptuous as to pretend to perfect obedience.

율법 아래 있으면서 율법에 의하여 의로워지기 원하는, 사도들에 의하여 은혜에서 멀어졌다고 증명이 된, 갈라디아의 공공연한 그리스도인들 조차도 자신들이 완전한 순종을 할 수 있기를 원한다는 가정 조차 하지 않는다.

Neither did those professed Christians in Galatia, who desired to be under the Law and to be justified by the Law, of whom the Apostle therefore testified that they had fallen from grace, presume to plead that they could yield perfect obedience.

반면에 그들의 공적인 고백을 보면, 그들 자신들이 그리스도의 의의 필요성에 대하여 의식을 하고 있음을 보여주고 있지만, 그들의 큰 잘못은 다음과 같다: 그들은 오직 그리스도의 의만을 가지고는 삶이 의롭다고 하기에는 충분하다고 믿지 않는 것이다. 그러므로 이들은 칭의를 위하여 부분적으로 그들 자신의 도덕법과 의식법에 대한 순종에 의지하는 것이다.  이들이 행위의 법에 집착하는 것과 이러한 율법의 행위를 통하여 의로워지려는 것을 비난할 때 가졌던 사도들의 관점은, 바로 이러한 것들에 대한 것이고, 완전한 순종을 하고자 하는 것에 대한 것이 아니다.

On the contrary, their public profession showed that they had some sense of their need of Christ’s righteousness; but their great error was this: they did not believe that the righteousness of Jesus Christ alone was sufficient to entitle them to the justification of life. And, therefore, they depended for justification partly upon their own obedience to the moral and the ceremonial law. It was this, and not their pretensions to perfect obedience, that the Apostle had in view when he blamed them for cleaving to the law of works, and for expecting justification by the works of the Law.

사도들이 지적한 바와 같이 의로워지기 위하여, 부분적으로 도덕법과 의식법에 순종하는 행위에 의존하는 것은 은혜와는 관계 없는 것이다. 그리스도는 이들에게 아무 효력이 없으며, 이들은 율법 전체에 대하여 빚진자가 되는 것이다.

By relying for justification partly on their own works of obedience to the moral and ceremonial laws, they, as the apostle informed them, were fallen from grace. Christ was become of no effect to them, and they were debtors to the whole law.

이로서 이들은 자신들이 행위와 은혜를 결합시킨 것을 제대로 볼 수 없었기에 그들의 위치에 대한 논리적 결론을 내리게 끔 했음을 알 수 있다.

You see he pushes them to the logical conclusion of their position, which they failed to see in their joining of works and grace.

그들은 의로워지기 위하여, 부분적으로는 율법에 대한 자신들의 불완전한 순종에 의지함으로서, 이들은 율법을 행위 언약으로 만들고서, 이러한 행위 언약이 완전한 순종 대신에 불완전한 순종을 허락하게 끔 만들어 버린 것이다.

By depending for justification partly on their imperfect obedience to the law, they framed the law into a covenant of works, and such a covenant of works too as could admit of imperfect instead of perfect obedience.

그리고 부분적으로는 그리스도의 의에 의존함으로서 이들은 칭의를 위하여, 율법을 복음과, 행위를 믿음과 섞어버린 것이다. 이렇게 함으로서 이들은 율법과 복음 모두를 손상 시켜버리게 된 것이다. 그리고 자신들을 위하여 잡다한 모양의 행위 언약을 만들게 된 것이다

And by relying partly on the righteousness of Christ, they mingled the law with the gospel, and works with faith, in the affair of justification. Thus, they perverted both the law and the gospel. And formed for themselves a motley covenant of works.
